New KTDA Chairman Sources New Markets for Kenyan Tea

The Chairman of Kenya Tea Development Authority KTDA David Ichoho has been keen to spearhead and champion reforms in the tea sector specifically sourcing for new markets as well as advocating for value addition of local tea.

The chair has for the past one week been on a working foreign trip in a delegation with the Cabinet Secretary for agriculture mithika Linturi.

“Today  I led the  Agriculture CS  Hon Mithika  Linturi to a tour of the KTDA Dubai office (DMCC). The office has been spearheading tea value addition and sales to Dubai,  Saudi Arabia,  Eastern Europe- Russia, CIS ( commonwealth Independent states) countries ( Uzbekistan,  Afaghanistan, Tajikistan Kazakhstan ), Iran and Iraq.” said Ichoho

It’s also a logistics centre for Asia, Europe and North America.

The centre has been value adding under CHAI GOLD  brand and has so far processing 30% of total tea at DMCC. Most of other value added tea at DMCC are of KTDA origin.

The CS commended the KTDA for the effort demonstrated in value addition and determination to expand the market for Kenya tea.

He reiterated the government commitment to value addition to the target of 50% in the next 5 years.

The KTDA is committed to expand market reach to consumers across the globe through market tea intelligence and blend tastes mapping.

This strategy and with cooperation of stakeholders should increase incomes to our hardworking farmers who produce the highest quality tea to the globe. 

We further visited the coffee DMCC and the CS committed to ensure the sector return to old glory of marketing and supplying coffee to the world and make much needed revenue for the farmers.

Accompanying the CS is Kirinyaga Senator Kamau  Murango Chair Agriculture Committee, KTDA CEO Wilson Muthaura  Board member James Omweno, MS Chairman Solomon Muriithi and KTDA dmcc staff.
