Bungoma County women have been challenged to be in the forefront in matters of development and socio – political issues in the community.

Speaking during the world International Women’s Day which was celebrated at Cheptais, Mt. Elgon Sub County, Bungoma Deputy Governor Janepher Mbatiany encouraged women in leadership to ignore political violence and cyberbullying and focus on development.

“It’s sad that cyber bullies never cease to attack women once they have risen to a top position in politics or any other administrative position,” Janepher pointed out.

She also added that most of the propagandists are youths who use the internet negatively by writing negative stories to tarnish women’s names on social media platforms.

On the other hand she condemned any efforts towards legalization of LGBTQ in Kenya citing that Kenya is a God fearing nation and condoning such practices is against moral values.

Janepher also encouraged women to be united and work together in unison towards a common goal of empowering each other.

“ We as Bungoma County leaders have vowed to work together despite the political differences so as to achieve the goal of bettering the lives of local mwananchi, I urge you to emulate this,” she reiterated.

In matters affecting Mt. Elgon women, Eunice Jepchumba who is the chairperson Maendeleo ya Wanawake discouraged FGM which she mentioned as a demeaning and demoralizing act.

“Being an anti FGM activist, we’ve been on the fore front to condemn this act that’s against women and children’s rights, we’re pushing for an alternative right of passage that will maintain dignity of women and promote their enlightenment,” divulged Jepchumba.

Conclusively, women were urged to prioritize their health and often seek medical advice.

“Let’s take our time to visit medical facilities and be checking our pressure and general health because such lifestyle diseases are the ones killing our women,” advised Janet Chebet, MOH official from Cheptais Hospital.
