Stakeholders Hold Discussion on Implementation of SPS Protocol

East African Business Council with the support from Trade Mark East Africa has held a Regional Public and Private Sector Consultative Engagement on the implementation of the EAC Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Measures Protocol in Nairobi.

In his opening remarks, EABC Board Member Mr. Mucai Kunyiha called for implementation of SPS Measures to ensure safety in trade.

He also encouraged use of technological innovation to address SPS challenges. He appreciated TMEA through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Netherlands for their technical and financial support to EABC under the EABC-TMEA Public Private Dialogue for Trade and Investment Regional Programme.

On her part, TMEA representative Ms. Paveen Mbeda explained TMEA’s role in facilitating regional integration and cross border trade to promote market access in EAC and beyond.

She recognised the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Netherlands for their support to the PPD Programme.

The government representative from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Co-operatives Dr. Mary Mwale explained the various measures undertaken by EAC Partner States to implement the SPS Protocol region.

The two day engagement seeks to:
☑️ Create awareness on implementation of SPS protocol,
☑️ Improve application of regional SPS framework, and
☑️ Identify priority SPS related measures to be implemented in the region.

This Regional Public and Private Sector Consultative Engagement convened EABC Board Member Mr. John Bosco Rusagara plus EABC Members composed of manufacturers, exporters, agro- producers and women cross border trades from the EAC region.
