These Are the Roads That will be Closed This Sunday
Standard Chartered has today announced road closures for the 19th edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon set for 30th October 2022.
The start and finishing points will be at Uhuru Gardens, Langata Road. Runners will use the scenic route on the southern bypass for the physical marathon thus experiencing a great view of the Nairobi National Park. Over 15,500 participants have registered for the marathon.
To support this initiative, the Nairobi Traffic Department has created a schedule of road closures and detours that will redirect traffic to and from the Southern Bypass to alternate routes between 12 am(midnight) and 1: 30 p.m. on 30th October 2022.
Speaking during the press briefing at Uhuru Gardens, Deputy Head Traffic Police Commander Mrs. Mary Kiarie said that they will work to minimise the inconvenience to drivers and pedestrians. She added, “We have created traffic diversions and provided access to alternative routes during the designated marathon hours. We recommend that users of the Southern Bypass use these routes. To ensure a smooth flow of traffic, we ask for the public’s cooperation with the traffic officers we have stationed around the routes. Additionally, we wish to reaffirm that strong security measures will be used to protect attendees.”
The marathon’s start times will be as follows:

Increased Elite Participation
Commenting on this, Peter Gitau, Chairman, Local Organising Committee said “We trust that the event will continue with little or no hitches. We will strive to deliver an inclusive, sustainable, and accessible marathon for all. To protect the integrity of the event, the organising committee is also collaborating closely with the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK). This will complement the services of the Race Technical Director, Route Marshals and CCTV cameras along the course to deliver a world-class marathon and experience to all participants.”
The marathon has promised a total Kitty of KES 10.6 million for winners in various categories. Over 172 elite athletes have registered for the marathon with winners in the full marathon receiving KES 2 million each. These include upcoming athletes including Asbel Kipruto, Bravin Kiprop, Prisca Jeptoo, Shyline Jepkorir Toroitich, Ezra Kipketer Tanui and Asbel Kipsang.
In recognition of the prevailing economic times, the marathon has capped the registration fee at KES 2,000 and extended registration period to 28th October 2022. Participants can also register and pick their running kit on the spot by visiting the running kit collection centre at Uhuru Gardens between 24th and 29th October 2022
All marathon proceeds go towards the Futuremakers initiative.
