Abdulswamad Shariff: Safety measures were already in place before tragic incident

Mombasa county government had already put up enough safety measures for holiday makers along the Indian Ocean beaches before the tragic incident at the Pirates beach.

Mombasa governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir put on a brave face saying he had also put up security measures apart from safety measures along the coastal beach line.

He announced that with the overwhelming numbers of holiday makers flocking the beaches an additional seven boats patrol in the ocean in Mombasa county.

‘The patrol boats will be moving around the county beach sites with death spots being targeted as a frequently as possible,’ he said.

Abdulswamad disclosed four boats will be stationed at the tragic spot where death occurred during this year’s Christmas day in the county.

He was addressing journalists during a fact finding mission at the famous public beach in Nyali constituency where two people died after a boat capsized on Christmas day.

The governor announced all recreational areas within the county will be patrolled by boats to intensify safety.

 Abdulswamad defended his action saying despite the accident relevant authorities must be well prepared.

He insisted all patrol boats are being allocated by government agencies as life saving is mandatory.

‘The county is in the process of recruiting youth which is at an advanced stage with swimming being an added advantage,’ he pointed out .
