Court of Appeal’s Decision on BBI Continues to attract Mixed Reactions

Mixed reactions continue across the country over the decision by the appellate court to throw out an appeal on the controversial Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).
United Green Movement [UGM] officials carried tree twigs in a celebratory mood outside the Mombasa law courts in Mombasa county.
Led by UGM Secretary General Hamissa Maalim Zaja they hailed the court of appeal for their land mark judgement against an appeal filed by the BBI proponents.
She lauded the opponents of the BBI who have stood firm against the unpopular move to amend the 2010 constitution through the back door for selfish gains ahead of the 2022 general elections.
“The move to amend the constitution through a referendum without due process being followed was another disaster waiting to happen as the country is bleeding economically,” she pointed out.
Hamissa wondered how a bloated executive was going to be paid monthly salaries when the country is in the process of economic recovery.
She was addressing the media during the celebrations in Mvita constituency, Mombasa county in support of the court of appeal judgement.
The UGM official poked holes in the BBI proposals saying the move would be a burden on taxpayers after the 2022 polls.
Hamissa told off the proponents of the initiative arguing that they never meant well for the ordinary Kenyans as it would have undermine the taxpayer.
She urged the electorate to tread carefully ahead of the polls and to vote wisely so that they do not live to regret their unwise decisions.
“Let the proponents of the BBI use the same energy to initiate development projects before the forthcoming polls,” she said.
The UGM spokesperson told journalists the country is faced with a lot of challenges which should be the priority and not the initiative.
Hamissa blasted the proponents of the initiative for going against the wishes of the majority.
“Let the government implement the 2010 constitution instead of taking the electorate in circles with an ill motive against the taxpayer,” she said.
