Embu Deputy Governor who also doubles up as the County Executive Committee Member for Health David Kariuki has stated that Embu Level Five Hospital is prepared enough to handle cases of Covid-19 in the county, away from what was captured in the media recently.

In a statement to newsrooms on Wednesday, Kariuki outlined that Embu County has a total number of 358 isolation beds out of which 124 isolation beds are at the Embu Level 5 Hospital. Two isolation bends are currently occupied as at 24th March 2021.

Kariuki added that the total number of occupied isolation beds at the hospital as at 24th March 2021 was two and that there was one confirmed case of Covid-19 and one and suspected case as at 24th March 2021.

“The number of isolation beds accessing piped oxygen at the Embu Level 5 Hospital – Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds is -12 (none is occupied as at 24th March 2021). The High Dependency Unit beds are 16 (none is occupied as at 24th March 2021. There are 14 ventilators available,” Kariuki further stated in the statement.

The Embu DG also stated that the hospital had a fully functional oxygen plant with the capacity of generating 800 litres of oxygen per minute adding that patients who required specialized services are identified and referred for specific care hence on a case by case basis.

“Covid- 19 cases are managed as follows, home based care for those with mild symptoms, hospitalization for patients who are asymptomatic and ICU for patients with severe illness. The hospital has two functional ambulances equipped with live saving equipment which are on call 24 hours. The Embu Level 5 hospital has the largest bed capacity within the larger Mt Kenya region and serves as the referral hospital for thousands of Kenyans from neighboring counties.” Kariuki explained.

However, Kariuki said despite financial challenges, the Embu Level 5 Hospital has 7 of the best theatres in the region, a fully functional Renal Unit, an Oncology Unit, a High Dependency Unit and has successfully completed over 300 brain surgeries in the past two years.

Amidst all these dynamics, he said, Embu Level 5 Hospital is committed to optimize patient experience in delivery of quality specialized healthcare through collaboration and support from all the relevant stakeholders.
