Government urged to urgently intervene to rescue Kenyans from the vagaries of poverty

The government has been challenged to avert further loss of lives and livelihoods from drought, famine and starvation due to the current climate change.

Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya [ICPAK] chairman George Mokua has sent a passionate appeal to the government to urgently intervene to rescue Kenyans from the vagaries of poverty due to the drought situation.

He said the current drought and hunger in Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands [ASALs] have risen to a crisis level.

“The current drought [2020-2022] has been the most severe and longest spanning five years,” he pointed out.

Mokua added this has caused widespread loss of livelihoods and a significant impact on the economy due to climate change.      

He was addressing journalists during the second edition of the 39th ICPAK annual seminar held at Whitesands beach hotel in Mombasa county.

The ICPAK chairman  pointed out the situation has led to the depletion of the country’s food baskets and reserves.  

Mokua, who was accompanied by organization chief executive officer [CEO] Edwin Nyabuga Makori, pointed out that climate change has displeasing scenes of dead animals and distressing wailing of people dying from hunger.

He reminded the government not only to focus on moderate interventions from the hunger-stricken communities but also on climate change interventions.       

“The climate change interventions which are long term solution,” he added.
