KPA projects good performance by end of planning period

The port of Mombasa managed to handle 25,66 million tons of cargo throughout in 2022.

KPA chairman Joseph Kibwana said the move is as compared to 26,47 million tons  recorded last year.

He disclosed container traffic registered 1,083,387 Twenty Equipment Unit [TEUs] in 2022.

“This is a compared to 1,099, 554 TEUs witnessed last year,” he pointed out.

Kibwana described the move as a negative variance and can be attributed to the resurgence of the COVID 19 pandemic.  

He was speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting during the 2022 KPA golf tournament played at Nyali Golf and Country Club in Mombasa county over the weekend.

The KPA board chairman said  the authority had projected a good performance by end of the planning period.

Kibwana said he regretted this subsequently affected major trading partners.

He pointed out that there was also the negative impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict coupled with adverse effects of inflationary pressures.

“There was also the volatile prices in fuel and key commodity markets and the rising cost of shipping,” he added.

The KPA boss reminded the forum this impacted negatively on the total supply chain process and hence their business.

Kibwana reiterated the performance at the port had registered a slight drop adding they were forced to put in place recovery strategies.
