A total of 25,000 tons of wheat has been donated to the government by the government of Ukraine.

Ukraine consule in Mombasa Oleksi Sierkov said the donation is his government’s program to assist and distribute food to countries severely affected by drought and famine.

He said the move is in line with an appeal made by Deputy
President of Kenya Rigathi Gachagua for aid to countries severely
affected by drought.

“I wish to confirm that today the Port of Mombasa has received the second bulk carrier with Ukarainian wheat since Russia launched a military attack,” he pointed out.Sierkov said his country is determined to remain a responsible guarantor of the global food security.

He was addressing journalists during the offloading of the wheat at berth number four at the port of Mombasa in Mombasa county.

The Ukrainian consule said this is despite suffering great humanitarian and economic losses from the ongoing, unprovoked and unjustified Russian aggression.

Sierkov pointed out at the G20 summit in Bali the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced a humanitarian programe “Grain from Ukraine” aimed at feeding atleast 5 million people across the world by summer 2023.

He added the donation is part and parcel of the  Government of Ukraine’s donation to the people of Kenya.

“As of November 21, a total of 483 ships with 11.6 million tons of Ukrainian grain and foodstuff were dispatched to the countries in Africa, Asia, and Europe through the Black Sea “Grain Corridor”, he added.

The consule said shipment is procured under the Black Sea Grain Initiative agreed upon by Ukraine.

Sierkov pointed out Turkiye and the UN joined Russia on July 22 to provide assurances regarding a safe and secure environment for all vessels engaged in transporting grains and foodstuff from three Ukrainian ports.

He added this ensures a steady supply of Ukrainian wheat, corn, sunflower oil and other food products to markets all around the world.
