The media fraternity within Mt. Elgon Sub County have been challenged to be peace ambassadors and build good working relationship with other stakeholders within and outside government offices.

Speaking during Media Information, Digital Literacy and Security dialogue training held by Media Council of Kenya at Chemoge, Mt. Elgon on Tuesday; Teddy Evans, the Regional Coordinator, MCK emphasized on the importance of building good working relationships in the society.

“Gone are the days when police officers and journalists were seen as water and paraffin, the police of today are knowledgeable and friendly hence providing a conducive working environment for media,” Teddy stated.

He however, cautioned journalists to be dignified in their profession despite having the right to access information from any public offices.

“ Despite the fact that you’re an accredited journalist, you should have respect for other offices and seek information with humility so as to maintain good rapport with each other as we carry out our daily activities,” he reiterated.

The issue of digging out quacks in the now flooded industry was also vastly discussed.

“Quack journalists have for a long time tarnished the media industry and as such we have come up with new press cards where only trained, qualified and certified journalists will acquire it through MCK,” elaborated Rebecca Mutiso, Manager, Accreditation and Compliance MCK.

She also mentioned that the digitized press cards are yet to be issued to the journalists whose old generation cards had been recalled so that they can continue with smooth coverage of stories.

Assistant County Comisioner 1 Josephat Kipyator who stood in for Deputy County Commissioner thanked MCK for having such an informative training session and vowed to work even more closely with journalists for the betterment of the society.

Mt.Elgon Sub County Information Officer Douglas Mudambo thanked MCK for taking the bold step of holding its first training in Mt. Elgon and promised that his department will spearhead more of such sessions in future.

“As journalists from this region we’re honoured to be recognized and granted such an educative yet interactive session with all stakeholders representatives present, we look forward to more of this,” he commented.

Also in attendance were representatives from security(police) team, the clergy, Community  Based Organisations , County government as well as youth groups.
