MOA Flags Off Road Safety Campaign to Reduce Mortality due to Traffic Accidents

The Matatu Owners Association (MOA) together with National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Isuzu Kenya and other stakeholders in transport sector has today held a joint flag off towards creating sensitization on road safety.

The campaign dubbed “slow down,ufike salama ” will run up to the 30th Of January 2023 and will give the public an opportunity to vote for the most competent road users via MOA’s short code “402332, as a way of encouraging road safety as a collective responsibility.

“Among the categories of road users to be awarded are honorable driver and conductor of the region and nationally and winning sacco of the region and nationally among others,” noted MOA CEO, Mutheu Musyimi.

Key determinants for the awards include; excellent customer service, empathy towards people living with disabilities, clean vehicles, uniformed crew and strict adherence to passenger capacity.

Addressing the media, Mr Kiarie, Road Safety Chairman, said that over 6000 people lost their lives via traffic accident. He also said that NTSA should be disbanded.

“Come 2023 things will be tough. We want the NTSA board to be disbanded, they only talk but takes no action. We will not tolerate them in failing to carry out their duties. The board should be ready to pack and go.” Kiarie said.

Speaking during the flagging off, Central Police Department Operations Commander David Apima cautioned town service public vehicles against illegally acquiring translation lookaside buffer (TLB) to ferry passengers over long distances during this festive season.

“I’m appealing to the passengers as well to work with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service to ensure road safety especially during this festive season,” said Mr. Apima.

“Do not board any vehicle that already exceeds it carrying capacity and report any wreckless driving via the short code provided by MOA,” he added.

As an additional road safety measure, Mr. Gitonga the chairman speed governor urged all vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles have a recall, which is a special sticker to ensure vehicles are doing the right thing at no cost at all, installed on them.

However, over-speeding was highlighted as the main cause of road carnage over the years and called out to all vehicle owners to ensure that the drivers undergo and properly understand road civic education. In addition, he called out to NTSA to step up in ensuring the numb er of road accidents reduce which is contrary to the current situation.
