Ruto Assures Port Workers He Will Lead by Example

Kenya Ports Authority [KPA] Managing Director Captain William Ruto has assured employees at the facility that he was going to lead by example.

He said despite being elevated to head the state corporation he was still an employee at the port of Mombasa.

‘There is nothing I don’t know or don’t understand about operations at the port of Mombasa,’ he added.

Ruto said that he is also a hard worker and captain of a vessel.

He was addressing the media when he witnessed the last day of offloading of relief foodstuff comprising sorghum and yellow peas from MV African Swan for humanitarian assistance at Lamu port in Lamu county.

The KPA MD said despite being elevated to head the authority he treats port workers as his colleagues.

Ruto told the media his priority at the authority is the welfare of the workers.

He pointed out his concern is also improving efficiency and enhancing port operations.

‘The welfare of workers and what the authority achieves are government gains,’ he added.

The KPA boss defended port workers saying the clear agenda is working for the government.

Ruto told journalists he is proud and happy with the port work which creates employment opportunities when a vessel docks along port facility.

He reiterated the authority has been the best in terms of efficiency in offloading goods.

‘The authority employees have great expectations at their areas of operations,’ he pointed out.

On 29th July 2023, whilst presiding over the Port Reforms Working Group Consultative Forum at the Port of Mombasa, H.E. Dr William Ruto, noted that the government aims to transform Kenyan ports to be globally competitive.

The President added that The productivity of the Port of Mombasa is directly linked to the state of our economy. Improving efficiency will help us create jobs, boost export volumes and stimulate economic growth.

Kenya Association of Manufacturers’ (KAM) has also lauded moves to enhance efficiency of the port saying its focus pillars on enhancing global competitiveness and fostering export-led growth to increase manufacturing sector contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the current 7.8% to 20% by 2030.
