Local leaders and civil society groups drawn from Mombasa county converged at the famous Pembe za Ndovu to remember anti government demonstrators who were killed by the police.

The brief prayer session was held amid tension as anti riot police officers cordoned off the meeting venue.

They organized the brief session hurriedly amid the deployment of anti riot police officers.

Civil society organizations under Concern-Citizen Kenya led by Bradley Ouna said the ceremony was in line with a directive by Azimio leader Raila Odinga to condole with the families who lost their loved ones through being shot by the police.

He refuted government claims the protesters were a threat to peace and security.

“The demonstrators were peaceful and were shot dead by the police who used excessive force,” he pointed out.

Bradley said apart from mourning the dead they were also praying for those who sustained injury.
